Ear disease includes acute and chronic infections of the external and middle ear, hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears) and balance disorders. These disorders occur during all phases of life and may be associated with other health problems, including allergies, stroke, trauma and birth disorders.
Initial evaluation includes a thorough history and exam, and an audiologic evaluation. Most infectious problems are quickly divided into those that will probably need surgery. Hearing loss evaluation seeks to identify those patients who need hearing aids and those who might be helped with surgery. Patients with balance disorders frequently are given an intensive examination and may require additional studies, such as electronystagmogram (ENG) and X-rays. Treatment for these patients often involves medication and physical therapy.
