All physicians designated as specialists have completed undergraduate university training and medical school, followed by years of additional training in their chosen specialty. An anesthesiologist, for example, spends four years in an anesthesiology residency program, sometimes followed by an additional year of fellowship training in a subspecialty practice area.

Your health plan may have a specific process for seeing a specialist. Many health plans require your primary care physician to refer you to a specialist, while others allow you to self-refer.
