SHSSR Donates $50,000 to Food Banks     12-14-2009

The Sutter Health Sacramento Sierra Region, a family of doctors, not-for-profit hospitals and other health care service providers, donated $50,000 to food banks across the greater Sacramento area this holiday season. A variety of local food banks will share the donation to help put much-needed meals on the tables of hundreds of families across the north state:

Amador County: Amador County Food Bank: $2,000

Placer County: Placer Food Bank: $14,500

Sacramento County: River City Food Bank: $22,000

Solano-Contra Costa counties: Food Bank of Solano and Contra Costa County: $5,500

Yolo County: Yolo County Children’s Alliance: $4,000

Yuba-Sutter counties: Beale Air Force Base Operation Warm Heart: $500, Brownsville Lutheran Ranch Church: $250, Salvation Army: $1,250

Sutter Health has a long history of partnering with and supporting charitable programs and services. This donation further expands this commitment. As budgets are stretched thin during these difficult economic times, donations such as Sutter Health’s help community food banks extend their significant purchasing power. For instance, at one area food bank, a $1 donation translates into $7 worth of distributed food.

"Due to the generous sum of money donated by Sutter Health, the Placer Food Bank will move closer to accomplishing our renewed strategic plan," said David Martinez, executive director of the Placer Food Bank. "We will preserve our aim to grow the food closet network, expand our grant writing capacity and continue to make ever greater strides in delivering superior food quality and nutritional education. We will fight for sound anti-hunger policies, and together with the professional community members of Placer County, we will use these tough times to reaffirm our mission: eliminate hunger!"

Meeting community health care needs is the cornerstone of Sutter Health’s not-for-profit mission. Throughout the Sacramento-Sierra region, Sutter donates more than $110 million each year to programs that benefit the broader community, as well as the poor and underserved.
